Summary

On June 20, 2023, an aircraft under tow onto a gate made contact with the wingtip of a parked aircraft belonging to the same airline, causing damage to the wingtips of both aircraft. Both aircraft are out of service. Fortunately, both planes were empty and there were no injuries.

The TPA Ground Operations Manual (GOM) requires wing walkers to always be with an aircraft as it’s being towed to ensure proper safety clearances are maintained. The tug operator must ensure they maintain visual contact with wing walkers to immediately stop a tow if a hazard materializes.
